Fortunately in civilization's current level of maturity, the title "Doctor" does not imply 'male'. However, in the time of Doctor Jeckle and Mister Hyde it would have been assumed that Doctor was intended in the masculine sense. To that end, the male side (Dr. Jeckle) is somewhat more primitive and muscular, while the female side is more feminine but just as deadly.
