Behind The Lens

Location

Gracie (sister of Portia) was one of a pair of female litter-mate rescue cats my wife adopted before we met; at the time this photo was taken we had recently moved into my partly finished new home and the cats were investigating the place. The temporary stairway guards left openings that a curious tabby like Gracie would pop her head out every time one of us was climbing the stairs, which was endless fun. One afternoon I got my camera and took a few shots of her looking around, including this one which is a favourite.

Time

This would have been late afternoon judging by the ambient light, it has been a while

Lighting

This shot is evenly lit with a bit of a shadow on the left side, lots of visible detail makes it a nice candidate for pencil portraiting

Equipment

This was taken with a Sony DSC-W30; 1/40 sec. f/2.8 6.3mm ISO 160

Inspiration

I just had to capture that pretty little cat face looking right at the camera ;^)

Editing

I used photoshop 5 to give it a sepia tone, adjust lighting and contrast, posterize it for the hair-and-whisker detail and cropped it to proportion

In my camera bag

Very little besides the point-and-shoot Canon SX400 at the moment. I keep it very simple

Feedback

Be patient, watch for opportunities and take lots of photos
