Behind The Lens

Location

Here is a lovely moody shot of the very famous historical site of Stonehenge on Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire, England.

Time

I loved this photo as it was taken on December 16th 2015 around mid afternoon. This was a spur of the moment thing as I had a day of from work, I wanted to practice my photography so I decided to visit Stonehenge as I do not live that far away from this monument. It had been raining most of the day but I still took my gear and went, this is one of the photos I ended up with.

Lighting

The lighting was all natural and as it was very dull and overcast it led to the mystery and drama of the ancient stones, the contrast of the greens and greys of the scene seem to blend seamlessly together to create what I thought was a well toned dramatic photo.

Equipment

For this day I used a Canon 750D set at f11, 1/10sec, with a Tamron 70-300 lens set at 70mm used on a tripod to keep everything steady with a wired remote for the trigger.

Inspiration

The last time I had visited the stones was about 30 years ago as a youngster, I think then you do not appreciate that sort of thing at a young age. As the years rolled by and I had driven past the stones many times I thought it was about time I actually stopped and spent time there so in I went and just started taking photos, as you can see with the photo here plus many more is the result of that trip to Stonehenge. It is a magic mystical place that will still be standing long after we have gone.

Editing

There was a small amount of post done in Lr just to bring the clarity and detail out as it was a damp overcast day with the grad filter tool to add that little more drama to the clouds and sky in the shot.

In my camera bag

Now as my photography has progressed I have a Canon 80D with a selection of lenses but here are my favorite ones now, Tamron 70-200 f2.8vc, Canon 24-70 f4l is, Canon 17-40 F4L and my favorite prime, Canon 50mmF1.8. The accessories I have are a set of Cokin Grads and ND Grads a yongnuo yn 568exii flash with spare battery's for camera and flash, also there is a sekonic light meter and assorted cleaning tools and clothes. The bag of course is the Lowepro 35L Nova sport shoulder bag with a manffroto monopod.

Feedback

There have been many many photos taken of these stones and it is difficult to give advice on when and how to photograph them. The summer solstice on June 20th is one of the best times as the sun sets between the two main stones, the only advice really I can give anyone is to follow your heart because if you feel it is the right time to take the photo then go ahead and take it. As we all know photography is an art and a memory of ours and everyone else's lives captured.
