Location
This shot was taken from a popular location in Edinburgh called Calton Hill. You get a great view from the city up there and its one of my favourite places to shoot the city from.Time
This was taken around 5pm in the winter. I'd taken the day off work, mostly to relax a little but also to take advantage of the christmas lights that were being installed around the city.Lighting
This shot was taken during 'earth day' (i think thats what its called). In an effort to conserve energy most of the city goes dark for an hour or so in the evening, because of this all the buildings surrounding this main street were dark, which added focus in the image to the street drawing the viewer to it. Because it had also been raining the car lights reflected of the street adding a bit extra oompf to the light trails.Equipment
I used a Canon 5d mkii, a tripod, remote shutter release and a 24 - 105mm L lens.Inspiration
The main inspiration for this shot was the clocktower. It was the first time they've ever decorated it with lights for the holiday season (if they've done it before then I've just not noticed). I wanted to get a shot where a prominent feature of the composition was that clocktower.Editing
I did a spot of post-processing in lightroom for this shot. I adjuste the colour balance a bit to the colder side as night images in the city here are always quite warm due to the orange street lights. I lowered the highlights a bit to get more detail out of the light trails.. but not to much. Then a bit of clarity, shadows adjustment and some sharpening. In my camera bag
The equipment I normally have with me are; tripd, remote shutter release, canon 5d mkii, 24 - 105mm L, 70 - 200mm L, circular polariser, 10 - stop ND filter, flash light (to prevent fumbling in the dark), and some water (photography can be thirsty work).Feedback
Plan ahead. Have an idea of what you want to achieve and how you're going to achieve it. Do the weather conditions meet your requirements? Is it the right time of day? Is your location accessible? Sometimes the conditions change or aren't quite right, dont get discourage, have patience and go back as many times as you need to ar are able to get the shot.
