Behind The Lens

Location

I took this shot at a small pond in the grounds of Nymphenburg Palace, in Munich.

Time

This was in the afternoon, as I was walking in the palace grounds. It was still cold outside since it was February but for a change, it was sunny that day. The sunlight reflecting off the water caught my eye, and looked almost surreal among the reflected tree branches.

Lighting

This was completely natural light and shadow.

Equipment

I used an Olympus OMD EM-5 mk 1 and Zuiko 60mm macro lens. This lens is very versatile, both amazing close-focus macro capabilities and also just a fantastic prime. I don't think I brought my tripod on this occasion.

Inspiration

The ethereal sparkles of sunlight contrasting with the dark, bare branches made me think of a hidden, fairy-tale world, and I think I got caught up in the feeling of mystery. The pond itself is actually quite small and ordinary, but you never know what you might find when you look deeper!

Editing

Only minimal exposure corrections for highlights and shadows. The angle of the sun on the water already gave it that murky color, which added to the air of mystery.

In my camera bag

I loved using the OMD EM-5 with the 60mm Zuiko, the 40-150 and the 12-50 zooms. Now I use a Fujifilm X-Pro2 with 18-135mm and an adapted Super Macro Takumar film lens for when I'm feeling super creative.

Feedback

Take some time to get a few different perspectives, and don't overlook the obvious! The magic hides in plain sight.
