Location
I took this photo in Augrabies, in the North Cape Province of South Africa while on a 10 day Road-Trip between Cape Town and Johannesburg. It was such a magnificent sight and fortunately I had my camera on hand.Time
We had decided to explore the Augrabies Falls National Park on a late afternoon game drive and when we cleared through a rocky gorge we where amazed to find the landscape vista open right up into a breathtaking contrast where the earth was nearly shadowed out at sunset with the onset of a dramatic and rather sudden storm.Lighting
Due to the dark lighting I hoped that I would be able capture and share the intensity of the moment without adding any light to ensure that the viewer would feel the almighty power in the sky that afternoon as if they were standing right there in the moment themselves.Equipment
Pentax K-x, 18-55mm Lens, f/16, 1/20, ISO-200 - No flash.Inspiration
This was was definitely one of those moments of "being in the right place at the right time" and having your camera on hand. I was not sure of my surroundings and was a little apprehensive at first to take my camera along on the drive, but after having been present at this majestic sight, I am certainly glad I had my camera with me.Editing
My style of photography is to portray the moment as it was for me at the time of taking the photograph. I have never really liked to "overwork" a photo, as it takes away from the technicality of taking a really good image. I slightly processed this picture by simply adjusting the contrasts to define the sun rays and make the picture "pop."In my camera bag
You never know what you might stumble upon so I always carry my full kit with me, one day I might be focusing on birds or wildlife using say a 500 lens and then you stumble upon a moment like this one and one of the smaller lenses was required. I always keep my camera bag/s well packed with at least 5 to 6 lenses with 2 bodies and as luck would have it I threw one in the boot that day.Feedback
Just because you might be focusing on one aspect of photography doesn't mean you shouldn't try your hand at another. Always try to explore further, look wider and give it a go. You may be well surprised with the outcome of photography adventures!
