Location
The image was taken at Robert Moses State Park on Long Island, NY.Time
I took this just as the summer sun was coming up about 5 am.Lighting
Since I wanted the Sun light behind Laurence I need to use a Speedlight with a Westcott softbox as fill light. My camera setting were Manual, 1/250 sec.at f/13 ISO 500, the flash was triggered by the Nikons Creative Lighting System using the SU-800 controller.Equipment
I been shooting Nikon for over 40 years, starting with the Nikonos Underwater Camera. For this image I was using my Nikon D3 with an SB-800 Speedlight off Camera camera flash on a Lightstand. The lens is my 24-70 F2.8 set at 66mm.Inspiration
Laurence and the time of day, She's a beautiful model and a close friend. We have been friends for 10 years now. She currently lives and works in St Maarten. When she comes back to NY we get at least one shoot in.Editing
I do very little post-processing, as I come from the days of film. I feel the images should be taken right in camera, however, I also realize digital images usually need some work and processing and I did add a vignette. In my camera bag
My Bags are Think Tank. For location Images like this I try and pack light. Usually its a backpack. One camera and 2 lens 70-200 f 2.8 and the 24-70. I have extra CF cards, Rechargeable batteries and a back-up flash. i don't use a tripod most of the time , however, I usually have one in the car incase I need it. I keep a Leather-man and Lens cleaning kit along with a camera rag.Feedback
When working on images like this,it helps if your model is a professional and only needs minor directions from the photographer. Time is limited because of the ever changing available light. Arrive early and get set up and ready to shoot. Test all equipment before hand. Getting the fill light just right, as to not look like flash is important I find working in Manual mode on both camera and flash allows me more control to capture the look i want. I don't take 50 shoots of the same pose, I try and take at least 3 images, while bracking the F stop leaving the shutter speed alone.
