Behind The Lens

Location

Planting fields in Oyster bay

Time

It was September 4th a 11:36 am, I was on my way to photograph some flowers with another photographer when i noticed an odd shape in a nearby bush. Upon closer examination I realized it was this praying Mantis.

Lighting

He was buried deep inside, which shaded him from the bright over head sun, however, I realized that the only way to capture him was with the use of flash.

Equipment

I had my Nikon D600 with a105mm macro lens set in commander mode. Attached to the lens was a Nikon R1C1 flash kit with3 SB R200 flash heads. One was set in group "A" and the 2 additional units in group "B". My ISO was set at 100 and my shutter speed at 1/250th. F stop was set to F9

Editing

The only post-processing was some cropping

In my camera bag

I use a Think tank Back Pack when I'm out shooting macro. I pack light, one camera body, a D800 or in this case my D600 with the 105 macro lens. several SB r200 flashes and the lens attachment ring plus some diffusers for the flash units and gels. I always have extra batteries and memory cards. Folded up inside is a small 12" circular diffuser. On location I attach my camera to a Black rapid sport strap and a Spider belt, set up to work together. I alway have my compact 3 Legged Thing Tripod along also.

Feedback

When shooting nature or macro move slow and look carefully, nature has provided excellent camouflage for many of it's creatures. Have a plan in place of what you want to shoot and get information on the location ahead of time. If possible check with the people the care for the grounds and follow the posted rules.
