Behind The Lens
Location
This photo was taken at a hotel my Fiance and I stayed at in Old Montreal, Canada. We went up there to celebrate Valentines day this year.(2016) It was a beautiful hotel in a beautiful city. It made for a very romantic evening.Time
We took this at 1:13 am February 14th 2016. My Fiance and I had just gotten back from our Valentines Day dinner and decided to do a photo-shoot that night. We had a lot of fun trying different setups and probably shot for a couple of hours. That's why it was taken so late into the evening.Lighting
The lighting setup for this was fairly simple. I had a monolight with an umbrella/softbox hybrid on camera left pointing down on her. I wanted a nice soft even light. Behind her on camera right I had a speed light with a mini softbox attached as a hair light that I was using for previous shots. I had forgotten to turn it off. I really only wanted to use the one light, but it was fine because it was above her slightly. It may have even added a little fill...but not much.Equipment
I used a Nikon D750 and a Tamron 24-70 f/2.8 lens. for flashes I used an Alien Bees B800 as the main light and a Yongnuo 568EX speed lightInspiration
I have been taking photos for many years, but only recently did I decide that I want to be better at it and learn to make great photo's. I'm completely self taught so it's been quite a learning process. Luckily my fiance loves to model for me, which allows me to practice and get better. We had done a boudoir style photo-shoot before and found that we both did really well at it and enjoyed it a lot. When we came up to Montreal to celebrate Valentines day we came prepared to do a boudoir style photo-shoot again. We wanted to just have a good time and see what kind of images we could create and to see if we could do better than last time.Editing
For this shot I edited the RAW image in Adobe Lightroom. That's where I got the color and lighting just how I wanted it. After that I brought it over to Photoshop and did a light amount of frequency separation for evening out the skin tones and fixing a few blemishes. In my camera bag
My bag ALWAYS has the same equipment in it. First and foremost is my Nikon D750 with a battery grip and blackrapid strap attached. Attached to the D750 is my workhorse lens; the Tamron 24-70 F/2.8. For a very long time I only used prime lenses, but once I got the 24-70 f/2.8 I found it rarely left my camera body. I also carry a 50mm f/1.8 with me. Sometimes I want a shallower depth of field or sometimes I just want tack sharp images and my 50mm rarely fails to deliver. My third and final lens that's always in my bag is my Nikon 70-200 F/2.8 VRII. I use that when I need a little more reach, or if I want a creamy blown out background with nice bokeh. I use it a lot for portraits. In addition to the camera and lenses I carry 2 Speed lights, extra batteries, memory cards, and a 5in1 reflector. With all that in my bag I'm always prepared to take, just about, any photo I want.Feedback
When shooting boudoir style photography I find it's very important to create a comfortable atmosphere for the model. This includes the temperature of the room. You want to make sure they aren't cold. Have a list of poses planned out. Take a good photo right off and show it to her. Once she sees how great she looks she'll relax and feel more comfortable going forward. For a shot like this one you need a shallow depth of field and good soft light. Get the right angle and body placement to create some depth to the photo and above all else focus on the eyes and get them as sharp as possible.
