Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on the coast of the Isle of Skye in Scotland. I was on a tour of the Highlands and our guide took us to this cliff side to have lunch. It was a bit of a hike to get there, but was definitely well worth it!

Time

This was taken around noon. The morning part of the tour had been very gloomy and damp, but once we hit this lunch spot the clouds parted and the sun came out in full force.

Lighting

Nothing too special about the lighting here. The sun was at its highest point in the sky, making it a great time for a landscape shot like this.

Equipment

This photo was taken with a GoPro Hero4 camera that I was simply holding in my hand.

Inspiration

A lot of people in the tour group were taking photos in this spot because it provided such a great view of the surrounding cliffs and water. I snapped this at the moment someone else was taking a photo of the girl posing in the photo (and I let her see it of course).

Editing

In order to get the lush green color of the cliff side to pop and contrast with the blue of the sky and water, I enhanced the saturation of the photo and added a slight touch of HDR effect.

In my camera bag

At the time I took this photo, I had a pole for my GoPro and a mini tripod. I also had a couple of backup batteries, because you don't want to get caught with a dead camera and miss a shot like this!

Feedback

My advice is to travel as much as you can, try and keep all of your equipment handy even if you feel you won't need it, and never let the weather discourage you from a day of shooting. When this day started, there were low gray clouds and spits of rain. Not necessarily ideal for shooting. But the weather changed suddenly into the bright, beautiful day you can see in this photo.
