Behind The Lens

Location

This Photo was taken on a trail leading to Mount Rigaud,Quebec, Canada.

Time

It was taken at 3pm

Lighting

I wanted to draw attention to the trail leading to the Sun and the frozen river on both sides of the trail gave more of a 3D depth. I also wanted to make sure to have no human footsteps on the trail and leaving it as natural as possible.

Equipment

Nikon D800,Nikon 14-24 f2.8 (the best lens to get that star looking Sun),Manfrotto monopod.

Inspiration

I have been going to this Mountain a few times to try new shots and this kind of hit me as soon as I saw the Sun hiding in the clouds and had to time it as soon as it peaked out of the clouds. Also having fresh snow covering the trails I had to take advantage of the natural untouched trails. Also the snow covered cross country ski trail creating a leading line in the image. With a few wildlife foot steps for a natural look.

Editing

Yes I used LR5 and just to adjust shaded areas and enhance sky color.

In my camera bag

I like to carryNikon D800 / Nikon 50mm f1.8 / Nikon 14-24 f2.8 / 14-85 f2.8-4 / Sigma 70-200 f2.8 / Sigma 150-600 Sport f5-6.3 Lens cleaning kits,Nexto Di storage / Carl Zeiss Binoculars / Sony HDR AS15 mini cam with backpack mount / Polarizing and ND filters. Manfrotto monopod and Manfrotto Carbon Tripod with Manfrotto 804RC2 Nikon Flash SB-600 with Flash Extender and extra + Magnu Speedlite. Think Tank 360 or Think Tank Street walker or F-Stop bag depending on the gear used.

Feedback

Planning a shot can be very beneficial and sometimes it can take several visits to a location to understand where the Sun will be positioned as well as scenarios that can create a perfect image.I used to be more spontaneous or amateurish and sometimes lucky but now I go on Google maps get a satellite image of the area and kind of visualize the shots I want, depending on the time of day.The best is when you combine planning and luck that's when it's near perfect. The more you know of the area you'll be shooting in the more inspired you'll be.
