Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was shot in a studio that a friend had arranged to use on a Sunday, it was purely for practice to start learning studio lighting.

Time

It was taken late Sunday morning on a fairly bright January day.

Lighting

Just started playing around with studio lighting and had four bowens 400's to use so they all got setup for this shot, front of model camera left was a 21" beauty dish, right of camera slightly behind model is a 48" strip box for a little edge light, hair light camera left high up to the rear of the model is just bare bulb and finally a 9" reflector dish with a purple gel was used to give a little interest to the backdrop, which was a mid grey.

Equipment

Camera was a Canon 760D with a 50mm 1.8 hand held @ f5.6, 180th sec, ISO 100

Inspiration

Just wanted to use what lighting was available in the studio and start learning what images could be got.

Editing

A little post processing in lightroom, mainly some spot removal of a few blemishes and exporting to jpeg.

In my camera bag

I don't have much equipment yet just started back into photography after not having a camera (other than the odd point & shoot, on holiday) in my hand for nearly 30 years, so I only have a Canon 760D & a 50mm 1.8, along with a couple of speedlights and a flash controller that most of my other shot are taken using those lights along with a 16" beauty dish I bought last month.

Feedback

No really great advice other than start taking photographs with whatever you can get your hands on, even if it is just a tungsten table lamp (which I have done) or if you can stretch your budget a bit and get a couple of second-hand speedlights they don't have to be top end flashes but you need to take photos even if you find your not totally happy with the end results you at least will start to find out a little about light placement and if you can get a model you will start to find your way round working with people and I personally think that if you want to do something, anything then the most difficult part is starting, once you you get going moving forward the next step will come to you.
