Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in a cool archway underpass in Central Park in New York City.

Time

I took this sometime in the afternoon as I was showing some of my friends around New York who have never been before. As we were walking past this underpass the arches caught my eye and I took a quick shot of it, which resulted in this picture that surprisingly came out better than I expected!

Lighting

I think that shooting this picture in black and white really helped bring out the contrast and the way that the light was shining down the stairs, which also helps highlight the beautiful design of the arches.

Equipment

This was actually shot from my iPhone 5s camera!

Inspiration

One of my favorite things about walking around a city is all of the photo opportunities you can stumble across without even noticing or expecting it. Whenever I'm walking around, I'm always looking at my surroundings in a way to see if there is anything I want to capture on my camera. In this particular case, I was inspired to take this photo the minute my eyes became drawn to this archway.

Editing

The only post-processing I did with this image was boosting up the contrast in order to create a more dramatic effect.

In my camera bag

I usually carry around more photo equipment than what is convenient. Whenever I'm out, I almost always bring my nikon d5100 camera with an 18-55mm lens as well as my Lomography La Sardina and Fisheye film cameras. If I'm feeling particularly determined to get an even larger variety of shots, I will also bring along my Lomo'Instant instax camera as well.

Feedback

The best advice I would be able to give is just to keep your eyes open. I've started to notice that I see things differently when I'm thinking in the mindset of trying to find something to shoot in the sense that I start to appreciate smaller details more, be it a cool archway that I stumble across while walking in Central Park or anything else that I wouldn't necessarily notice if I wasn't trying to be more aware of my surroundings.
