Behind The Lens
Location
This photo was taken in my new home studio. I am a new, self taught photographer so still life was a great way to practise my technique.Time
This shot was taken 2 hours after sun up. The roses in my garden had just opened and I had been watching this particular bloom for a few days to enable me to get it at its best.Lighting
Natural sunlight proved to be too strong to get the details of the petals right so I took the shot with the flower on the window sill with a thin white sheet hanging which was just enough to diffuse the lighting.Equipment
This was shot on a Nikon D3200 with a 18-55mm lens.Inspiration
Since taking up photography, I have seen things in a different light. I used to see a yellow rose. Now I see a bud, depth of colour, shadows and ridges. Waiting for the bud to burst open, come into perfection and capturing that precise moment so it is never lost.Editing
I try not to do too much editing. Especially with my floral photography. I rather take the time to get the shot as well in proportion and good lighting before taking the shot. This particular shot was just cropped to fit the frame. In my camera bag
I would love to say that I pack a bag with all the professional equipment that the photographers I aspire to seem to pack in their bags. The truth is, as a new photographer, I pack my camera, my 18-55mm lense, a Sigma 70-300mm lens, a spare SD card and a spare battery. I still have an awful lot to learn but the equipment I have, does the job I need it to very well. Photography can be a very expensive hobby but for all new budding photographers out there, you don't need top of the range equipment to get good quality shots. Just a good eye and patience.Feedback
For this particular image, it all came down to the lighting and the shadows. Too much or too little lighting and the finer detail on the petals would have been lost. Trying different positions on the window sill to get the shadows right and trying different materials to diffuse the light. I tried several different materials until I found that a this cotton sheet gave me just the right level of lighting I was looking for.
