Behind The Lens

Location

Lake Bemidji State Park in Minnesota. My wife and I do lot of camping and always in one of our many state parks. These trips always center around hiking and shooting.

Time

I am what I like to call an "opportunist photographer" which means I get out in nature when I can and look at what is given me. No matter what time of day it is, there are beautiful images just begging to be captured. This shot was taken at 11:30am while out on a morning hike with my wife.

Lighting

most photographers will tell you the best time to take photos is in the morning or the "golden hour" but I use whatever I get and make the best of it. This image was taken in late morning while out on a hike

Equipment

Canon T3I. Canon EFS 55-250mm lens. Hand held

Inspiration

I take "portraits of nature" which means I look at everything around me as a possible subject. Flower, weed, rock, leaf, nothing is ruled out and everything can be beautiful when captured the right way. So I saw these tiny flowers along side the trail and knew I had a perfect subject.

Editing

I use Photoshop Lightroom and do nothing more than correct color, density and clarity

In my camera bag

Canon 80D, Canon T3I, battery pack/vertical grip for both bodies. Lenses: Canon EFS 18-55mm,Canon EFS 135, Canon EFS 55-250mm Filters: various ND, variable density filters for all lenses, All stored in a Mosiso backpack Tripod/Monopod: Vanguard Ultra 70 w/Pergefir ballhead. MONOPOD: Opteka M900 w/ WF 002H

Feedback

Get out in nature! Forget about what time of day and whether there are clouds or sun, just get out. Look at everything around you and find those small, seemingly insignificant things you might otherwise ignore. And remember to loom down at your feet as you'd be amazed at what you can find
