Behind The Lens

Location
This image was taken during a recent lifestyle sessions, for me it symbolises the eternal love this father will have for his daughter. It was taken in my clients home in the beautiful Welsh Countryside.
Time
The image was taken around 3pm in the afternoon, after searching around the house we found the best light in the baby's nursery.
Lighting
I wanted a moody light and chose this little pocket of Natural light . Personally I prefer to do a lifestyle session using natural light, for me it really does bring an image alive and gives it an emotive feel. I tend to expose for the highlights and play about with the m and shadows post processing. I think it's also to remember that the light in your clients house will change throughout the day, so ensure they are prepared that you will be moving around the house checking out the best natural light.
Equipment
I used a canon 6d paired with the sigma 35mm 1.4 Art lens which was set to 1.8, ISO 800.
Inspiration
The family themselves, I spent a few hours with them and found out so much about what they love to do as a family, their backstory, I wanted to tell their story in the best possible way. It was evident that their baby girl was the centre of their universe. Lifestyle photography is all about throwing out the rule book and being creative, as you can see, the child's face is not fully in the frame, for me I wanted to focus on dad's hands encasing his beautiful baby girl, for me it is such a strong, emotive image that signifies what being a parent actually means, being their to protect and love them unconditionally. Dads hands show that he is a hard working man, worn and rugged, yet when he is holding his daughter they appear soft and
Editing
Yes I used Lightroom for post processing, I knew as soon as I took the shot that It would be a black and white edit. I used a VCSO preset (TRI-X) and tweaked it until It had the desired effect. upping the contrast ad reducing the grain.
In my camera bag
I have my much loved Canon 6d, 50mm 1.4, 85mm 1.8 and 35mm 1.4, occasionally I hire out the 135 2.0 for outdoor sessions as I love the Bokeh, so this lens is most deffinatley next on my list. I also have a canon speed light for when I need a burst of flash, however being a natural light photographer this rarely gets used. I tend carry marbles in my bag to use to find catch lights, along with a bag of bribery chocolate and not forgetting a tub of trusty Bubbles.
Feedback
Each family is unique, the way they interact will not be the same as your previous sessions, so upon initial consultation you will need to get to know what makes them tick. Lifestyle is so beautiful, and it really is an honour to be invited into a family home to capture some of those precious memories. Get to know them, have a cup of tea and a chat with them before you get the camera out, ask what their day to day life is like, do they have a lazy Sunday eating pancakes and snuggles on the couch. Ask them to show you around their home so you can observe the light. And throw away the rule book.. be creative, break the rules sometimes the most flawed images, really are the best. and last but not least, photograph everything, and I mean everything, the pictures on the wall, the teddy bears, the chaos the mess, the tantrums, the tears, the laughter and smiles... and remember to have fun!!
