Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in a beautiful little Glen in Scotland. It is one of my favourite locations to shoot in as it is so hidden away.

Time

I believe we took this late morning on a beautiful day in September.

Lighting

This was shot with just natural light.

Equipment

I shot this on my Nikon D750 using my 85mm 1.4 lens on my Three Legged Thing Brian tripod. A combination I love. No other equipment was used.

Inspiration

The outfit was so "fairytale princess" to me that I knew I wanted a beautiful, soft and dreamy location. So we wandered around the area and found this spot with all the soft foliage and the tree arching over as a perfect frame for the image. So it all just came together beautifully. I'd say the outfit was definitely the basis of the inspiration for the image.

Editing

Yes, I love processing images and dedicate a lot of time to each image I create. This particular image was created with the Brenizer method so I had to start in Photoshop by stitching several images together to get the frame you see here. After that I did some retouching and tweaked the colours and contrast a bit before finishing off the image using Alien Skin Exposure for sharpening, grain and other finishing touches.

In my camera bag

I'm a bit of a minimalist and I'm also a prime lover. My bag only had my D750 body in it and then my nikkor 85mm 1.4 which pretty much lives on my camera and rarely is used at anything other than wide-open. I also carry a nikkor 50mm 1.4 and a Sigma Art 35mm 1.4 both for situations where I am forced to be closer to my subject than my 85mm will allow. As you can tell, I like a shallow depth of field so I couldn't be without a 1.4 lens line up.

Feedback

I think a lot of things need to come together to create some images. Even if an image looks effortless it often wasn't effortless to create! Clothing was key here - the feel would have been very different in casual clothing! I had a professional model and a wonderful MUA as well on this shoot and I love working with a great team. I do plenty of images without help or professional models, but it is always easier with them. While it appears a simple image, it involved an hr or two of hair and makeup, lending of a designer corset and 2hrs to get to the location before we even started. But it was all worth it! Putting in prep time is never a waste of time. I would also suggest learning the basics of post processing. In that way you can turn what is in front of you into anything you can picture in your mind. You can create your own fairytales.
