Behind The Lens

Location

Crystal is primarily known for her amazing pin-up modeling, but she is actually extremely versatile and can portray a multitude of looks with great success. I have worked with Crystal on many occasions, and on this day in the studio we were playing with some elegant silver screen era looks. She had a red dress, and one of the props we had was this hat, which tilted at an angle was reminiscent of 'flappers' and such form the 1920's - 30's. As we were shooting, we were working with some low-key lighting techniques, and I had her turn towards the light, and when she did so she just parted her lips and the hat was at a perfect angle and I captured the image you see here. The rapport we have working together allows me to just let her 'do her thing' with little direction and capture her in some stunning images. This image has won a number of awards and has been featured in galleries, and is still one of our favorite images we created together.

Time

We were actually shooting a variety looks one evening in my studio, as she was also shooting some images as a surprise Christmas gift for her fiance'.

Lighting

This was actually a very simple, low key lighting scenario with my main light off to my left (her right), with her turning to face towards the light while her torso was facing my camera.

Equipment

Canon Mark V with an 18-55 standard lens, with the ISO on 100, and Paul C. Buff White Lightning 800 lighting.

Inspiration

Simply put, working with Crystal is always very easy as she has a great sense of positioning and lighting, and the silver screen era look we were shooting for this set, while a new look for her, was one she instantly seemed to grasp the more dramatic posing that was typical for that era. As she gets more in tune with the look she is portraying, the easier it is to capture some amazing images.

Editing

I did some basic photoshop with a digital gem to smooth out the skin and color saturation using Picasa.

In my camera bag

Nowadays I would say my 'go to' camera is my Canon T6. Simple, lightweight and durable, and very versatile in studio or on location. I usually have 4-6 lenses with me, from the standard 18-55mm to a 300mm lens.

Feedback

Play with different lighting techniques. The beauty of the technology we have now allows us to really experiment more without the cost of film being incorporated into the mix.
