Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo while on a last-minute trip to Puerto Rico. It was December, and I wanted to escape the cold NY winter, so I hopped a flight to PR, and decided to check out Old San Juan! This is in the old fort, in the soldier barracks.

Time

This was taken midday, probably around 2pm.

Lighting

The lighting was interesting, because I'd been shooting in full-sun outside, but this was technically an indoor area. It was open to the outside, though, and since the walls were a very light color, it reflected light beautifully throughout the space!

Equipment

I used my Nikon D7100 - and I believe... My 35mm lens (which crops to about 52mm with crop sensor camera)

Inspiration

I was drawn to the symmetry and architecture. I think the lines are beautiful, and that the continuous doorway openings sort of invite you in.

Editing

I did some post processing. I took saturation levels all the way down to make it black and white, and then bumped up contrast, clarity and brightness just a touch.

In my camera bag

I honestly don't carry much in my bag on adventurous outings like this. If I'm going to explore, I usually have my camera body, my 35mm and 50mm lenses, and an extra battery.

Feedback

I think my advice would be to just slow down! Take things in, study a space. Notice the way the light touches this spot, or hits that place - when you do that, you get photos that you can really be proud of. They become memorable to you when take the time to appreciate what you're capturing!
