Location
This photo was taken at a reservoir near where I live, the area was completely transformed under a thick blanket of mist.Time
It was taken around noon on a crisp midwinter's day, although judging by the amount of light making its way onto the shimmering surface of the water, it could have been anytime at all. It was almost as if we were in some kind of beautiful limbo.Lighting
I really loved how the reflection was such a beautiful mirror of what was happening on land- yet there was a clear colour difference between the two. The warm sunlight glow was a kind of yellow colour behind the trees, but it reflected a cold dark blue in the water.Equipment
This was shot on a Sony A7s with Canon 24-105L lens. All sat atop a trusty manfrotto tripod which was half submerged in the lake.Inspiration
I was actually shooting a music video when this shot was taken. The final shot in the video featured the two figures stood next to each other in the reflection, but only the boy was visible on land- she was invisible. It signified how he was so close in his search for her, but she was always just out of reach. However- I didn't feel this visual effect was motivated enough in a standalone image, so I posted the unedited photograph here.Editing
I only did minor colour correction to really bring out the yellow and blue contrast, to really make them stand out from each other. In my camera bag
I try to pack light, but as a filmmaker this is inherently difficult! The profession seems to sit hand in hand with gear-hoarding. But if I can get away with it, for a quick photo trip. I will pack my Sony A7s, RX100, Canon 24-105, Canon 70-200, Canon 2x extender, various vintage lenses, Metabones adapter (for the canon glass) and my trusty Canon Ae1 for some analogue film joy!Feedback
If you get a misty day, pounce on it! I was lucky enough to have this low mist hang around for the whole day, often it will only be present in the morning so it's worth getting up early if you want a foggy atmosphere. With regards to getting nice reflections, the key is to get close to the water (not too close, watch that expensive gear!) and wait for it to settle.
