You just cannot stage nature and friends having a good time. Nor should you. Stan's early morning paddle on Shoshone Lake in Yellowstone turned out to be a great shot, but the memory is what matters to me. That's why I am a photographer.Time
The night was looking like it would be clear, so we never did put on the rain fly to the tent. The happy result was being woken to this glorious sunrise, everyone else still asleep, and we had this magic hour to ourselvesLighting
Hang out in the right place with the right people long enough, and sooner or later the right time will come skipping along, hands in hands with the right lighting.Equipment
Just a little Sony Cyber-shot point and shootInspiration
We like to think pictures tell the truth, but the reality is they usually only show a partial truth--maybe that amazing untracked landscape shot you see has a highway just outside of view. Filters can make cheap photographers out of anyone, and even Ansel Adams did not hesitate to burn out the cement high school initials on the mountainside of his Winter Sunrise photograph. And I believe that's perfectly ok--photography is about art, after all--and I still find myself breathing deeper when I see those rare shots that show the truth. So when opportunity knocked on me tent door to take a stunning picture exactly as the world presented it, I took it.Editing
Nope! this one is rawIn my camera bag
I love to take pictures, but I'm no professional and all I own is a little Sony Cyber-shot. The camera doesn't look like much, but will surprise you with it's powerful lens and good optical zoom. It fits my style to; I'm really out there to enjoy the outdoors, and good pictures are an added bonus. Maybe that's a little abnormal for a photography website, but I like my hobby and I am always interested in learning from others; plus there's always the simple enjoyment of seeing what people are photographing.Feedback
Places like Yellowstone get photographed a lot--the park sees four million iPhone armed trigger happy visitors a year--so if you want to get something special, you're gonna have to leave the common attractions. Just getting to Shoshone Lake requires first driving through Teton National Park to a lonely outpost in Yellowstone, paddling across a big lake, and then pulling your canoe up a river for several miles. My advice is to enjoy the whole of it, and not just through a viewfinder or digital screen.
