Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken on one of my outings with my French Spaniel (Rory) to one of her favorite playmates (Rosie) a English Springer Spaniel.

Time

It was mid afternoon, on this snowy day. Living in the far north the sun sets fairly early so the light can be soft very early!

Lighting

With the day being cloudy I didn't need to worry about any harsh shadows or the fur being blown out.

Equipment

I just started on my dslr journey and have a Nikon D3200. The lens is a Sigma 50-150 f2.8 which has been my go too lens for the year!

Inspiration

These two dogs were always crazy and full of life together. I wanted to capture the intensity of play and friendship, along with them emerging from the snow!

Editing

Yes. I edited lightroom. I wanted the snow to disappear into white for the background but also wanted to make sure I kept my dark points to make the dogs pop as well. I didn't want the picture to have an over edited appearance though.

In my camera bag

As I mentioned I'm just starting out in my journey so right now my Sigma 50-150 is always on my camera and always out. My bag is just there to backpack it out around along with my camera

Feedback

Waiting for the right timing with the right background takes patience. Get down on the ground so you are at eye level with your subjects keeping the focus on the first dog with a good depth of field so the second subject will also be in focus. Have the camera shutter on continuous shooting and keep holding the shutter down. I also use back button focusing so I refocus quickly with my moving subject. Don't forget to check the exposure for the subject and not the snow in background!
