Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Costa Rica. We signed up for a photography trip with Road Scholar. To our surprise our instructor was a National Geographic Nature Photographer.

Time

My goal when signing up for the photography tour in Costa Rica was to photograph these colorful frogs. This photo was taken in the middle of the day. This Red Eyed frog was sound asleep by a leaf. I guess we disturbed the frog because he woke up. Stretched his legs and then climbed to this branch.

Lighting

I did not want to disturb the frog by using a flash. The national geographic photographer leading our group said it would be alright to hold a flashlight nearby.

Equipment

This was shot with an Olympus OMD EM1. Lens Olympus 12-40mm 2.8, Aperture F8, ISO 800, Speed 1/160, Focal Length 40mm. (Coverts to 80mm since it is a mirror-less camera and lens.

Inspiration

I went to Costa Rica with the intention of photographing frogs. We would go out at night with flashlights in the forest looking for the frogs. Most of the time it was raining but we continued on. This red eyed frog was taken during the day.

Editing

I import all of my photos in Light room. I have the settings on Auto-tone. I also cropped and sharpened the photo.

In my camera bag

I have switched from a full Frame Canon 6D to the Olympus OMD EM1 Mirrorless System. The main reason that I switched was because of weight. I am a shaky shooter. The less weight the better for me. I have the 24-40mm 2.8 Pro lens, Olympus 40-150 2.8 Pro Lens, Olympus 7-14 2.8 Pro Lens, and Olympus 300 mm Pro lens.

Feedback

The capture a photo of the red eyed frog you have to be patient. You have to go out at night even in the rain with a flashlight. You have to look underneath the leaves because they ball up to camouflage themselves beside. You need a good flashlight. You need someone to hold the flashlight.
