Behind The Lens

Location

This photo is taken from my home in Georgia. On my back deck and backyard, I have created a bird santuary. They have lots of food, water, places to hide. The bluebirds especially like mealworms. I have started my own mealworm farm just for the blue birds.

Time

I named this little bluebird chippy. When I sit down to have my breakfast each morning, Chippy comes to join me. He is wondering where his mealworms are. During this spring, Chippy has now brought his wife and his three babies to join us each morning for breakfast. Even though the window separates us, we have a connection.

Lighting

I really lucked out with the lighting. It was a cloudy day and the morning sun was not creating shadows on Chippy. I did not use a flash as I am shooting through the window.

Equipment

This was shot with an Olympus OMD EM1. Lens Olympus 75-300mm F4-8- 6.7 .Aperature 6.2 , ISO 200, Speed 1/100 sec ,Focal Length 215mm.

Inspiration

I love my bluebirds that are in my backyard. As you can see I even named the male Chippy. Actually I just call all of my bluebirds Chippy. I pretty much always have my camera sitting on the kitchen table just so I can catch a quick shot if one presents itself. I have very many of my backyard birds: tufted titmouse and their babies, Carolina Wrens and their babies, Brown headed nuthatches and their babies, Downy Woodpeckers and their babies, Red Bellied Woodpeckers, Gold Finch and many more. But the blue birds are my favorite. This is my favorite of "Chippy". He has actually become quite famous on facebook. My friends are always interested in what is going on in Chippys world.

Editing

I was not using a tripod and I tend to be a shaky shooter. I was amazed that Chippy came out as "tack sharp" as he did. I reduced the noise just a little and cropped him so the photo would be vertical instead of horizontal. I felt the way he was looking the photo was just telling me "vertical, vertical"!

In my camera bag

I have switch from a full Frame Canon 6D to the Olympus OMD EM1 Mirrorless System. The main reason that I switched was because of the weight. Like I said I am a shaky shooter. The less weight the better for me. I used to have a rolling camera bag for my Canon 6D. Now with the weight of the camera and lens, I only have to carry a small messanger bag. I love it! It makes traveling with my camera and lens so much easier. Lens: Olympus 12-40 2.8, Olympus 40-150 2.8, Olympus 40-150 4.0 - 5.6, Olympus 75-300 4.8 - 6.7, Olympus 300 4.0 and a teleconverter. Note: My husbands shoots with the same camera so we share the lens. Also when using mirrorless the focal length is not the same. For instance the Prime 300 is really a 600.

Feedback

If you love the birds the way I do, then you will create a place they will love to come and enjoy. I never had many birds because I had cats. Now I not longer have cats so they birds are really enjoying coming to our feeders. They especially like that I feed them live mealworms for breakfast and dinner.
