Behind The Lens

Location

I took this shot in my California home with an adjustable table light I had just bought. I was experimenting with it and a bouquet of flowers I bought at the store.

Time

I took this photograph in the late morning/early afternoon, while my kids were in school. It can be hard to concentrate with them running around.

Lighting

I wanted this photo to have a lot of contrast and look like it was glowing. I used my new little light (which was brighter than I thought) to light up the petals from the back.

Equipment

For this shot I used my Canon 7D with a Tamron 16mm-300mm lens. To get the contrast, I set the ISO around 1600.

Inspiration

I just haven't gotten out much since I moved to a new city. I found the easiest way for me to express my creativity without driving somewhere and worrying about the sun is to do indoors and experiment with lighting and macros.

Editing

For this image, I didn't do much post work. I adjusted the levels a little and sharpened it a bit.

In my camera bag

I love using my Tamron 16mm-300mm lens. I can zoom in if I want or zoom out, or both. It gives me more options without having to change lenses or cameras. I also always have my Canon 50mm macro lens. Getting up close and personal with nature is what I do best.

Feedback

I just love to experiment to see what happens. I usually have an idea of the effect I want, but sometimes just trying different things gives you a whole now way of looking at your subjects. Some of my favorite photos are from doing something out of my normal settings, like this one.
