Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at Science World in False Creek in Vancouver, BC, Canada. I love night photography and the Vancouver skyline is one of the most beautiful I've seen specially with that awesome stadium and the colors it has illuminating the city.

Time

I decided one night to leave my house around 11pm and head down to Science World to take a few photos around there, that structure on the right is the Cirque du Soleil that has been coming to Vancouver for the past 5 years if I'm not mistaken. So i put my camera on my tripod and took a shot at making a panorama of the skyline at night, till this day this is one of my favorite images, it shows how calm this side of the water is and how lively the city of Vancouver is at night.

Lighting

Lighting is everywhere in this photo, i just wanted to take a photo that showed how beautiful the skyline of this city is. The stadium lighting did help me a lot haha. Tried to get as many stars as i could but with all the city lights that becomes a pretty hard task to achieve.

Equipment

This was shot with my first real camera, the Sony NEX 6, since then I've upgraded to a Sony A7 but that little camera was amazing. Shot on a 16mm f9 for 30 seconds.

Inspiration

Since I moved to Vancouver from Brazil in 2010 I always loved the city's skyline. I only got into photography in 2013 and after a whole year of playing around with that camera i started getting into night photography, i just find it fascinating that you can take a photo of something for about 1 min or so and it brings that to life. Long exposure is one of my favorite techniques to use. So with Vancouver being my home now I wanted to capture what it looked like to me, in the FG a peaceful part of the city where the water barely moves and on the other side of the water the lively beautiful downtown of Vancouver.

Editing

This photo had almost no post processing. I brought the single photos i took into Lightroom and merged them together to make a panomara, after that I just did some adjustments to the highlights and shadows and some sharpening, nothing too crazy.

In my camera bag

Usually I carry my Sony A7, my 50mm f1.8, the 10mm-18mm f4 and my new vaforite the 70mm-210mm f4. With that i bring either my Jobi flexible tripod or for more planned trips my Manfrotto tripod. I also bring with me some ND filters for my long exposures. I try to keep it pretty simple. Once in a while I bring my Yashica film camera with either a 28mm 2.8 or a 50mm 1.8 lens.

Feedback

I'd say planning is very important, try to check the weather as much as you can, living is Vancouver is hard because the weather is so crazy here and so unpredictable that it's hard to plan. But when you get that lucky day go for it! For night photography definitely invest on a good tripod that will keep your photos sharp, I have a ball head on mine, that's just my preference. I mentioned before that I wanted to get some stars in this photo, but as you can imagine the city lights will never allow that to happen. If you want to have a landscape photo with stars in the sky go far away from the city and you will be able to capture some amazing photos. Another thing I like to do that not a lot of people take advantage of is use my ND filters to take long exposures during the day, they help me bring down the shutter speed down to 30 seconds even on a sunny day and take some nice photos of people walking to show movement or make the water become mist.
