Usually I'm avoiding tourist traps and much photographed places. But during the winter it's not crowded and thought is was a nice way to get to know my camera and the mills of Kinderdijk...

Kinderdijk is situated in a polder in the Alblasserwaard at the confluence of the Lek and Noord rivers. To drain the polder, a system of 19 windmills was built around 1740. This group of mills is the largest concentration of old windmills in the Netherlands. The windmills of Kinderdijk are one of the best-known Dutch tourist sites. They have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997.

Behind The Lens

Location

At Kinderdijk, situated in a polder in the Alblasserwaard at the confluence of the Lek and Noord rivers. To drain the polder, a system of 19 windmills was built around 1740. This group of mills is the largest concentration of old windmills in the Netherlands. The windmills of Kinderdijk are one of the best-known Dutch tourist sites. They have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997.

Time

The 16th of February 2015 started sunny, but by the time I took his photo around 4:00 PM it was rather hazy. Great circumstances for this photo.

Lighting

Fortunately there was still enough light. All the mills where visible and there wasn’t much wind. Perfect to catch some reflections in the water.

Equipment

With a Canon 70D, Canon 17-40mm f/4L USM. No other equipment involved.

Inspiration

I’ve challenged myself to look for an original point of view and angle at this location. Usually I'm avoiding tourist traps and much photographed places. But during winter it's not that crowded.

Editing

I’ve chosen to convert the RAW photo to black & white. In color the effect of the fading mills wasn’t that strong, the colors were flat and so was the sky. I’m very happy with the monochrome result.

In my camera bag

Of course my Canon 70D and my favorite lens which is the Canon 17-40mm f/4L USM. My other great and versatile lens I often use is the Canon EF100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM. For my favorite topics like animals, (contemporary) architecture, close-ups both lenses work very well. Most of the time I shoot handheld for better control of the camera. Sometimes I use a mono pod.

Feedback

When you find yourself in crowded and much photographed places it’s important to take your time, be patient, have a good look around, despite the weather. Even a dull looking day can bring fun and great photographic results.
