Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at my cousin's wedding in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida during their wedding reception.

Time

I believe it was late afternoon, but it was an interior shot so time of day doesn't matter. There was little natural light.

Lighting

I was working on depth of field and this was a perfect opportunity to try shallow depth of field. The entryway into the wedding reception hall was dark but these lanterns created a warm and beautiful pathway into the reception hall.

Equipment

Nikon D7100 cropped camera with 24-70m lens I believe. Hand held with no tripod or flash.

Inspiration

I loved the warm lighting and the way they strung the lights that lead you into the reception hall. I balanced the photo out with the other lantern, but used the strung lights to guide the eye to the lantern that was in focus. It's all about balance and guiding the eye to what you want people to see.

Editing

I took it so long ago that I don't remember, but I believe the lighting came out too warm and I cooled the overall lighting a little to get the effect I wanted.

In my camera bag

Now, I have two cameras: Nikon D750 (full frame) and D7200 (cropped frame), Nikon Speed Light 900 & 800, Sigma 10-24m, Sigma 50m, Sigma 24-105m and Nikon 105m, extra rechargeable batteries and SD cards.

Feedback

Use shallow depth of field like f5.6, use a high ISO like 1000 or higher, a steady hand or a tripod if you go below 60 seconds, and by attention to your composition.
