This photo was taken at local zoo in Boise, Idaho. Even with all the hustle and bustle, this Red Fox was peacefully snoozing away!Time
I captured this sometime in the afternoon during a family excursion when my sister and her family were in town. It was a fun day for all of us!Lighting
The enclosure stood comfortably in the shadows, which reduced the glare and allowed me to get close enough for a level of intimacy rarely experienced with a creature such as this.Equipment
I shot this with a Nikon D5300 and the 18-55mm kit lens. You can do a lot with a fairly basic setup.Inspiration
It's my love and appreciated for all creatures big and small that inspired this the most. I was particularly drawn by the serenity of the scene, it's as if fox was dreaming!Editing
Beyond bringing the light and color up to speed, I utilized "dehaze" to help eliminate glare caused by the ambient light. I finished by applying blurred vignette to reduce the harsher glares.In my camera bag
Right now I operate fairly light when it comes to equipment and I manage pretty well with my Nikon D5300. The 18-55 3.5 kit lens is nice and versatile and my 55-300mm 4.5 telephoto lens is amazing in how it allows me to pull up nice and close to subjects without violating their need for space. I also get a lot of mileage out my 35mm 1.8 prime, it's a fantastic lens and definitely worth the rather small investment. Beyond that, I have an external flash and a basic tripod to utilize when needed.Feedback
Zoos are often a great place to not only capture images of subjects you'd normally have to travel great distances to see. There are still plenty of challenges to learn from, so overall Zoos offer wonderful opportunity to get some great images while learning in a much more laid-back environment. Of course, luck is a major factor when it comes to wildlife photography, so the more time you spend doing it the greater your odds are of capturing something magnificent!
