Behind The Lens

Location
This photo was taken off the shore of Kona Hawaii. We were free diving with spinner dolphins
Time
This shot was taken mid morning as we wanted to catch the dolphins as they moved up the coast line to go feed.
Lighting
With this photo the idea was to capture the beauty of the Hawaiian waters while also capturing the dramatic aspect of free diving. We shot this in the early morning to get a nice cross light through the water to light my subject and show the visibility. We used all natural light for this shot.
Equipment
This photo was shot on a Canon T5i with a Nauticam underwater housing. 10-17mm Tokina lens with a 4" dome port on the housing. All natural light.
Inspiration
This photo is to show the contrast between the dark Fourth Element top with a pop of orange writing against the beautiful blue water background. The natural light was used to highlight my subject to really make him stand out in the water. As we swam alongside the migrating spinner dolphins you become mesmerized by their grace and elegance as the dolphins effortlessly swim through the water. This shot almost captures the opposite of that, while still looking completely smooth in the water us humans still can never quite mimic the beauty of a dolphin in their natural habitat.
Editing
This photos was edited in Lightroom 6. Very minimal editing was done, nothing outside of regular highlight and shadow adjustments, skin tone white balance, and a vignette to focus the eye dead center on the image.
In my camera bag
In the water I have been shooting with the T5i and housing setup. Out of water I use a Nikon D750 along with my 14-24mm lens for landscapes.
Feedback
Underwater is always a tricky place to photograph but with some basic equipment, the right natural lighting, and a good visibility day anything is possible. My advice is to always just get out there, experiment, and have a blast with your camera!
