Manarola, like the other Cinque Terre, is squeezed between the Ligurian Sea and the steep mountain range that separates the Apennines at the Monte Zatta and descends towards the south-east by the watershed between the Val di Vara and the coastal zone. The village is in the final stretch of the river valley Groppo. The colorful houses, constituted by the typical houses Genoese towers, overlooking a behind the other on the main street, called Via Discovolo obtained from coverage of the watercourse. The country then climbs the rocky ridge that juts out into the sea, resulting in a network of narrow alleyways, which run parallel across multiple intermediate levels connected by stairways irregular slate. To the northwest of Manarola are three other villages of the Cinque Terre, or Monterosso, Corniglia and Vernazza, while to the south-east is Riomaggiore. Among the five boroughs is the smallest after Corniglia.
