Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in almost the geographic center of Sydney in Homebush Bay, which sits alongside of the Sydney Olympic Precinct on the Parramatta River.

Time

This photo was taken at around 10PM in January

Lighting

The lighting around this location can be a little challenging. There are bright city lights in the distance, and very dark foreground areas.

Equipment

I used a Sony A7r and Zeiss 16-35mm f4 lens, cable release,Manfrotto tripod and a torch.

Inspiration

I'm always inspired by harbour and water scenes around Sydney. At the time I discovered this location it was a complete surprise and I thought it was a great eclectic mix of old and new. A hidden gem. These days it's more widely known of, though I still like coming back now and again.

Editing

The main areas of processing were working with the shadow areas. I exposed as best I could for the highlights and worked with what I had. White balance can change the whole look and feel of this image. Tone curve and local adjustments help accentuate interesting features.

In my camera bag

Sony A7r, Zeiss 16-35 f4, 50mm, Cable release, ND and polarizing filter, cleaning cloths, spare battery

Feedback

Always keep an eye on your histogram, or at least review your highlights! Windy conditions can change the look and texture of the water quite a lot, including the size of the city light reflections. 3 - 5 minute exposures are common at this location. Bringing a torch to add some light to mangroves on the ship and shore can help with some great looking effects. The tide will also influence how close and at what height you can photograph this scene, as at high tide, you have to stand on top of the bank, while low tide, you are right on water level. There are also other interesting angles to capture, so it's definitely not a one shot location.
