Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken from the western side of the Sydney Harbour Bridge just outside Luna Park.

Time

The photo was taken around 9:30 - 10:30PM

Lighting

As with most night time city landscape photos, getting that balance between blown highlights and shadow detail was tricky in this single exposure photograph. No additional lighting was used.

Equipment

I used a Fuji X-Pro1 and Fuji 14mm F2.8 lens sitting on a Manfroto CX190Pro3 Tripod.

Inspiration

At the time I had very little spare time to take landscape photos. I found going out at night have me more time to practice. Sydney is full of potential when it comes to night photography, so I had plenty of choice and practice.

Editing

Only simple post processing was done with this photo. Standard tone changes and paying particular attention to highlights was about it.

In my camera bag

At the moment I carry a Sony kit most of the time. A7r, 16-35, Samyang 14mm F2.8, Samyang 85mm F1.4 and Sony FE 35mm F2.8. Spare batteries (Often needed with Sony) and a cable release. Normal cleaning equipment, particularly useful when windy and around salt water. My trusty old Manfrotto Tripod and Sirui Ball Head.

Feedback

Patience was my greatest asset when it came to this photo. Exposures between 30 and 60 seconds meant that any moving light on the harbour was captured. Sometimes this looks great, but in this case I wanted clean water, so with Sydney having such a busy waterway, I remember it took a long time to get a clear 60 seconds!
