Behind The Lens

Location

I have spent 10 months Omer four visits at Sanaga Yong chimpanzee rescue center in Cameroon. I have worked with them since 2008 using photography and video to tell their story.

Time

I took this photo in the afternoon right before the chimpanzees come in for the evening.

Lighting

Bouboule is an older female who has the respect of the rest of her group. She is intelligent and calm and seems to hold an ancient wisdom behind her eyes.

Equipment

I really don’t remember, I travel with many cameras. But I know it was a Canon.

Inspiration

This gaze! I strive to capture animals the way I see them and the way they see me. The mutual gaze of an animal is a very special moment.

Editing

I pushed up contrast and shadows and tool out saturation.
