Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken near our resort in Turrialba, Costa Rica. The fence had been wound into the trees and allowed the trees to grow around the wire, making a new bridge for the ants to use. It seemed like a nice balance of man vs. nature.

Time

I was walking around the property just after 6pm mid summer.

Lighting

With the 6pm light and a thin layer of clouds, it was a great day to photograph without any harsh lighting. That kit lens is great for travel but it needs a bright day to photo anything like this ant, and it can't get much better than bright sun with thin clouds

Equipment

Canon EOS 60D with the kit EF-S 18-135 f/3.5-5.6

Inspiration

I was simply trying to take in the natural landscapes and wildlife of the area and after chasing birds for an hour, I set my sights a little lower and found this hard-working ant who, like all ants, will stop at nothing to get where he's going.

Editing

Basic color correction but nothing dramatic.

In my camera bag

Unless I'm traveling far distances, I've got my Canon EOS 6D with my Sigma 24-105mm F/4 Art series. In the bag to accompany that is always a Tokina 12-28mm F/4, a Canon 50mm f/1.4, Canon 85mm f/1.8 and most recently I've added the 100mm Macro F/2.8L If I'm not traveling far at all or if I've got something specific in mind, I will lug my 400mm f/5.6L but it's not an easy travel lens, and sometimes I'll bring along my Canon EOS 60D for sports or simply for the benefit of the crop factor.

Feedback

As is always true with nature photography, it's all about being there. You just have to put yourself into the right place and be patient until the right time.
