This Image was Taken in Iceland, on the Ice Beach near Jokulsarlon.Time
It was taken about 4 pm as the sun was setting , This was December in Iceland so the days were pretty short.Lighting
There are many pieces of Ice on the Beach & the best ones to find are the clearer ones opposed to the dull frosty ones. I found this one with a hole in facing the setting sun. As the sun went down the top of the Ice warmed up as the sun refracted through it & the cool blue of the ocean tinted the bottom of the ice offering up a nice depth to the image.Equipment
I used a Canon 5D mk3 , with a 17mm Lens on a Feisol Tripod & ball head .Inspiration
I was searching for a bit of Ice with a hole in that I could shoot through at sunset. I had been with another more experienced photographer who inspired me to try it.Editing
Yes , this one had a fair bit of processing. I only had a standard wide angle zoom & it was placed only a few mm from the hole in the Ice. So to get front to back sharpness for this image I shot about 7 images and focus stacked them in Lightroom . From that point I used Lightroom to make global adjustments before taking the image into photoshop for finishing touches , such as localized dodging & burning .In my camera bag
Currently I'm using a f-stop Loka Bag & Inside are a Canon 5Dmk3 , 16-35mm f4 , 24-105mm f4 , 70-200mm f4 , a selection of Hitech filters & a Nisi filter holder system with an integrated Polarizer. spare memory cards/batteries , alan keys for the tripod, cleaning cloths , a couple bungee straps , plastic bags x 2 & neoprene rain cover.Feedback
The Ice beach in Iceland is a very popular area and there are many many images from there. For me trying to get something a bit different was a key thing. Experimenting with different positions for the camera, such as low down, close up etc can open up some original ideas . In the winter in Iceland the days are very short so the light is pretty good all day ( all 5 hours of it ) as long as the weather stays clear. The waves on the Ice beach can be deadly though so always keep your eye on the waves as the backwash can pull you over very easily ( as i found out one day ! )
