Location
On a trail through the forest behind the Royal Botanical Gardens in Burlington CanadaTime
It was after school as we had picked up our granddaughter to take her to the forest so she could photograph a massive tree root which she had planned to paint for an art project. However a large snowfall began just as we picked her up and the roads were not yet plowed, making the drive slow and dangerous. Most people were returning home from work in rush hour traffic, while we were off on a hike into the forest. It was winter, thus we did not have much time before it got dark.Lighting
The lighting in the forest was good for taking pictures as there was no sun and no shade, however snow was falling so we had to make sure the camera lens was dry.Equipment
I was using a Nikon D5300 camera and hand held.Inspiration
Before we reached the massive tree root, we were swarmed by birds (chickadees, downy woodpeckers and nuthatches) looking for bird seed. The reason was that many people who come on these trails have bird seed to feed the birds from their hands. however we had none. In addition we were the only people there as everyone else had left due to the snow storm. If you look at the picture, our granddaughter only had snow on her gloves and the birds are almost asking "where is the bird seed?". The birds were flying on and off her so fast that she just had a look of amazement on her face. I took numerous pictures and this seemed to be the best with a few birds on her, and catching her facial expression.Editing
I cropped the picture and made some minor adjustments to sharpen the picture as it was snowing. In my camera bag
I normally just bring a camera with me and no other equipment.Feedback
We were at the right place in bad weather, where everyone else had gone, thus sometimes you have to out in bad weather and get lucky to get the perfect picture.
