Location
This photo was taken at Crater Lake National park in Oregon. The chipmunks there are very friendly and will eat directly from your hand.Time
I got pretty lucky, as we were just stopping by as a pit stop on a larger trip. It was right in the middle of the day when the sun is normally the highest. The only reason I was able to achieve this sort of background was that there is a cliff right behind the subject, and the 'black' you see is the lake itself.Lighting
The direct sunlight was on the subject, and the 'black' background is actually the lake itself. Since Crater Lake is so deep, its very dark.Equipment
This is a much older shot of mine, I used my old Canon Rebel T3i, with whatever stock lens it came with. Very early on in my photography days.Inspiration
The chipmunks were so cute and they were absolutely everywhere. I wanted to capture something that would show how silly and playful they were.Editing
I didn't really do much post-processing. I brought out the highlights so the subject was entirely lit, and I dropped the shadows so the background is nearly black. In my camera bag
During this photo, i only had my Canon Rebel T3i. Now days I carry a Canon 7DMII, with multiple lens, a Mavic Mini, and a DJi Osmo.Feedback
The tricky part to get something similar would be to find a place where the chipmunks don't mind people. There are a few places around Oregon like this. Once you know a place, bring some snacks, set them out, and be patient.
