I took this photo on my incredible trip to Ireland. I encountered a particularly friendly seagull along the Dingle Peninsula.Time
It was in the afternoon on a mildly overcast day. I had lucked-out with the weather throughout my week-long tour of the southern coast of Ireland; most days were quite sunny--not the typical Irish climate!Lighting
The clouds seemed to work to my advantage, as they softened the lighting on the gull, but also providing a background that gave a "white-out" effect and brought out the color in the bird's eyes and beak.Equipment
I used a Canon EOS Rebel T4i with a Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS lens and very steady hands!Inspiration
I love birds and appreciate their many qualities, and I love the excitement of successfully capturing them on camera--so I didn't hesitate to take the opportunity to get up close to the seagull. I wanted to give it a somewhat regal appearance in the photograph, since seagulls are usually overlooked or sometimes seen as pests.Editing
No post-processing whatsoever! In my camera bag
I typically use my 55-250mm lens with my Canon EOS Rebel T4i, but for wider angle shots I'll use my Canon EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM lens.Feedback
Bird photography is by no means easy—sometimes quite frustrating—so it mainly takes patience. With birds that are more accustomed to people, such as seagulls or pigeons, it is much easier, but otherwise, you have to be quiet and still and let the birds come to you.
