Location
This is inside the Atomium in Brussels, Belgium. Built for the 1958 worlds fair, this is one of Brussels most notable landmarks.Time
Late morning - crowds get busier in the afternoon and towards the evening, and as this was in winter, finding a less busy time was key in being able to get shots without people in the way!Lighting
The interior lighting for each sphere is slightly different as you move your way around. This staircase connecting one sphere to another was just too good not to pass up with the way the connecting tube contrasted with the red staircase.Equipment
My trusty Canon 40D with the EF 28-135mm. Did not have a tripod with me, so I steadied myself low to get as still as possible.Inspiration
The Atomium celebrates science as represents the immediate post war period where everyone thought we’d have flying cars by 2020 - classic 1950s outlook on the future, having just come out of the most destructive war imaginable. This reminded me of David Bowie’s “Space Oddity” song - looking up this stairway you can imagine “Major Tom” walking up into his capsule.Editing
A little - my standard post processing routine in Aperture (which I still use as I am super comfortable with it and haven’t had to leave...although I know at some point I’ll have too since Apple no longer supports it) bring out the colors/increase the contrast and clean up any bright spots...but this one did not need much!In my camera bag
I upgraded everything - so my normal walk around bag now has a 1Dx, a 24-70 f2.8L and a 70-200 f2.8L. I’ll add or subtract based on where I am going and what I will be shooting.Feedback
Be patient but also be quick - and what I mean by that is stay for a long look at something you want to shoot like this, as you may need to wait for the right op - but once you get it, be deliberate and quick about getting your shot. Bracket, take multiple shots and try to be as efficient as possible without rushing: that will keep you on the good side of museum staffs/guards or the people behind you waiting!
