Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken at Makapuu Beach on the island of Oahu.

Time

This area is popular for sunrises, Milky Way etc. I arrived at the location at 3:30am for MW. But it was too cloudy. We decided to wait and stay for the sunrise.

Lighting

Taken during “blue hour”. I had just started in my photography journey. Probably several months experience at the time.

Equipment

This was taken with a Sony a7rii, the 16-35 lens and at the time a Fotopro tripod.

Inspiration

Actually went for Milky Way. Since the conditions weren’t good for MW, we hung around to see how the sunrise would be.

Editing

As I mentioned earlier, I was new to photography and didn’t know much about post processing. I used Lr but just basic slider adjustments for exposure, saturation, shadows. I wish I kept the raw file knowing what I know now

In my camera bag

My every day carry: Camera: a7riii and a7iii Lens: 24/1.4 , 135/1.8 and either 100-400 or 200-600 NiSi filters Spare batteries, wipes, rocket blower etc. Shutter release cable Really Right Stuff tripod (well not in the bag) Think Tank camera bag/backpack depending on how many equipment I decide to haul (lights etc)

Feedback

If new like me at the time, watch and learn tutorials beforehand so you can try different techniques like long exposure, settings, etc. A sturdy tripod is key. This place gets windy. Filters are excellent to have for landscape/seascape shots. Download weather apps etc. so you know when the conditions will produce the best possible conditions. Go early and go often!!
