The herd of Wisent in Bialowieza region of Eastern Poland is one of the first examples that large mammals can be brought back from (near) extinction. After World War 1 the last wild individual was shot and soon after the Polish government started a rigorous breeding program with zoo animals. These days there are more than 500 living wild in Bialowieza and numerous herds have been started in other parts of Poland, central and western Europe!
