Behind The Lens

Location

I was set up to do business portraits and I usually use myself when calibrating my lights. On this particular day I decided to actually pose for the photograph. I’ve always loved doing black and white photographs so this was a no brainer. When we were still using film I did all my own processing from exposure to mounting the print. Happy to say that I have won many awards for my black and white photographs.

Time

Morning

Lighting

I’ve been controlling my lights for over fifty years so I had no problem with placement of my lights.

Equipment

I used a Canon 5D Mark II a Canon 100mm L lens. The exposure was f.8. The backlight was a photogenic studio master two. The fill light was a white lightning (Paul Buff) and the main light was a photogenic power master the main light had a parabolic reflector with barn doors and the fill light had a soft box.

Inspiration

What inspired me to take this photograph? I thought I looked cool.

Editing

Post processing was what I would have used in a darkroom.

In my camera bag

I use mostly fixed lenses. I carry a 20mm, 50mm, 100mm and an 85mm.’

Feedback

Learn Portrait Lighting. I also use a Seconic hand held meter. I calibrate at a one stop difference between my main and fill lights. In this particular instance I used a two stop difference.
