Behind The Lens

Location

Being passionate about hiking, nature and exploring the outdoors has led me to many a moment of awe, this beautiful sunset (one of many that we witnessed, but by far the most spectacular) occurred in the midst of by far one of the toughest, yet most enjoyable Hikes I've ever done - The Otter Trail (https://www.sanparks.org/parks/garden_route/camps/storms_river/tourism/otter.php). The phot was within 200m of the hiking huts.

Time

I believe the time was close to 18:00, though I will have to check my raw file to be sure.

Lighting

Capturing a sunset scene can be quite tricky, you don't want to overexpose and lose some of the shadows which lend themselves to the scene, nor do you want to underexpose - dulling the colours and darkening the scene too much. set your aperture to make the most of the remaining light.

Equipment

Nikon D3100, 18-55mm Nikkor lens

Inspiration

It had just been one of the hardest days (we had a rather strenuous river crossing around 07:00 after waking up at 4 to make sure we got there for the right tide) and we had rested a bit before scrambling over the rocks and beaches to explore, and on our return I noticed the light catching the waves and looked up to see a quickly changing spectrum of colours as the sun started dipping over the horizon. I am a sucker for sunsets and when I took in the full view from the hut knew that it was a memory worth capturing.

Editing

Not that I recall, I generally like to keep my photographs as unedited where I can.

In my camera bag

I normally have my tripod, 18-55 Nikkor Lens, 55-200 Nikkor lens, and my Sigma 150-500mm f5-6.3 Telephoto Lens.

Feedback

Practice! Keep your camera on manual, play around with your iso, aperture and exposure settings until you are happy with the images you are taking. You will learn general settings and to adjust them on the fly so that you don't miss those windows of opportunity for great shots.
