Behind The Lens

Location

Perth Zoo, Perth, Western Australia

Time

It was my visit to the Zoo in Perth and I had never seen an African Lion before. As we reached the lion enclosure at noon there were 3 males of which 2 were chewing on bones but behind logs. This one which seemed like the Alpha was sitting and a lioness walked up to him and started licking his face. It was a very tiuching scene.

Lighting

The day was a bright summer day with so much of light. Had to bring down the ISO to as low as possible to let just enough light to give me a perfect picture.

Equipment

I use a Canon 7D camera with a Canon EF 100-400mm US ISM lens.

Inspiration

The love I saw in the eyes of the lioness was really amazing. The lion as proud as he usually is was not giving her a glance but the lioness was not going to budge in showing off her love for him.

Editing

I usually shoot only in RAW as it allows me to do a bit of post processing, but in this case I dont remember doing much of post processing with the RAW file.

In my camera bag

My bag usually contains my Canon 7D camera, a Canon 100-400mm lens, a Canon EFS 55-200mm kit lens and a 50mm lens for portraits. Apart from that I make it a point to carry extra batteries and memory cards and a lens and camera cleaning kit. But the most important thing in ky bag would be sachets of silica gel to keep my camera and lens moisture free.

Feedback

Studying the subject and its environment before you take a picture is very important. For me I had 3 lions to choose from and was very tempted to take a pic of the lions chewing on the bones but being aware of the surroundings helped me spot the emotion depicted in the picture. All I can say is choose your subject wisely. But also be open to what is happening around the subject.
