Location
This photo was taken in a place called Carrasqueira. It´s a small fishing village close to a city called Setúbal in Portugal. There´s also here a famous wooden fishing harbor of witch I´ll be posting a photo soon.Time
I made this shot in August 16 2015, at 05:44PM. It was mid summer in Portugal, so the sun was still quite high at this hour.Lighting
The interesting thing about this shot´s lighting is the contrast between the cloudy sky up north and the sun shining on the south side of the river where I was standing. Although the sun was still high, it was already in a slight angle, so it gives the image some good shadows, not too dark, but enough for a good contrast overall.Equipment
The camera I used for this shot was a Panasonic DMC-LZ20 (with Leica optics). This was a hand held shot, so no tripod. The camera is a super zoom point-and-shoot, so no filters involved in this shot.Inspiration
My inspiration was the old fishing harbor and the old traditional boats, the river itself, and the scenery it creates. In a calm and quiet day, with the right weather, at the right hour, anyone can make great photos in this place.Editing
This was shot with a point-and-shoot camera, so the processing was in-camera and automatic, including the sepia toning. The only thing I did was to crop the image in a simple image software. In my camera bag
I normally have my Nikon D3300, a 18-55mm Nikkor lens, a 70-200mm Tamron lens, some ND filters, polarizing filters, a remote trigger and a tripod. And some times I still bring my Panasonic DMC-LZ20 when my daughter goes with me to take some shots too.Feedback
If you like landscape photography my only humble advice is just to go out and explore. If you are a beginner (like me), just enjoy the ride, relax, look around and you´ll always find something to shoot. If your goal is to make more interesting photos then you should know your weather conditions before you go out, choose the time of the day that inspires you most, like sunrise, sunset, or night photography. Although you can make some good photos in the middle of the day, for landscape it´s generally not the best option. Get to know your equipment, and learn what you can do with it. Practice and learn from your own shots. Learn about light, and composition. For example, in this shot I tried to apply the rule of thirds to improve my composition, and waited for the sun to be in a lower angle to get more interesting shadows. Because the day was mostly cloudy, I chose a sepia tone for this image. But there´s a ton of options and stiles to do the same shot, you should choose your own. Be creative. Anyway, as I sad before, just go out, explore and have fun. That´s what it´s all about, enjoy the day and have fun.
