Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in beautiful Half Moon Cay while on a cruise. I was snorkeling near the shore with the camera taking photos of the smaller fish near the bedding, when the sea turtle swam over to feed.

Time

It was right before noon when I captured the sea turtle. The sun was right over head of us, and the water was glistening along with all of the marine life swimming about.

Lighting

The sun did all the work for the original picture. With the bright blue water and the glimmering of the reflections lit this beautiful world with magical lighting.

Equipment

I used a standard waterproof camera that has been in my family for many years. I did not use flash because it was unnecessary and I did not want to use flash on a wild animal.

Inspiration

When I was a kid, one of my favorite animals was a turtle. I loved how ancient, yet majestic they looked. I have never seen a wild sea turtle until this moment, and it was almost as if it was my childhood dreams coming true.

Editing

The original photo was already magical in its own ways, but I wanted to add a little more magic to it. I decided to add the photo to my phone and use a few photoshop apps I bought to create a magical world. I added metallic arches and placed them in different sizes and layers to give more depth in the picture. I then proceeded to add lens flares on the metal arches and reflections to make the arches seem to be more real rather than an addition to the picture.

In my camera bag

I usually do not take underwater pictures, but when I do I usually only carry an older waterproof digital camera that my grandmother lets me borrow.

Feedback

I was very lucky to have such an encounter. You will increase your chances of having these encounters if you travel where the food is. Whether it’s a bedding or small fish, whever the small ecosystem is, the larger animals will eventually be there too. When taking pictures of marine life, it’s wise to never go over to touch any of the habitat or try to touch the animals. Swimming slow and avoid swimming straight toward them. Be patient, because it will take wildlife to be comfortable with you around. Most importantly, have fun and enjoy your surroundings. If you are looking through the lens the whole time, you might miss something beautiful. It wasn’t until I put my camera down and turned around did I see this amazing creature swimming around me.
