Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in the shallows of a cove off of Watts Bar Lake in East Tennessee. My family owns a small piece of lake accessible land with views of a plateau in the distance.

Time

I took this photo at about 8 o'clock in the morning on a crisp January day. The lake was calmer than I have ever seen it, not even a ripple stirred the surface. I had woken early so that I wouldn't miss the light, but was instead greeted by a thick blanket of fog. It was eerie how quiet everything was, the only sounds coming from the occasional wave lapping the shore.

Lighting

Because of the heavy fog, all of the available light was extremely diffused, yet the early time of day meant that the light was still somewhat directional, casting gorgeous, soft shadows across the elements in the frame.

Equipment

I took this picture when I was a Junior in High School, so I wasn't aware of the benefits of tripod assisted long exposures, or flash compensation. I didn't even know enough to photograph in RAW. However, I knew what composition I wanted, and the light was in my favor. The camera I used was a Canon EOS 7D onto which I had mounted a 28-135mm Canon EF lens.

Inspiration

I was a lonely kid. I was homeschooled and as a result, often found myself going long periods of time without seeing friends. So I read... A lot. Books transported me to far away lands, gave me magic powers, and lifted me onto the backs of dragons. This photograph is only a small part of a ten-photo series called "The Secret Life" in which I try to re-create that childhood feeling.

Editing

The only post processing I did to this image was to convert in to black and white and tweak the contrast ever so slightly.

In my camera bag

At the time which I took this picture, all I had in my bag was a Canon EOS 7D and a Canon 28-135mm lens. However, fast forward five years and I carry a few more items with me. Today, my bag contains a Canon EOS 5Ds onto which I usually have mounted a Canon EF 28 mm Prime. I also have a Canon 50mm and Canon 85mm. When I'm not walking very far, I use a SLIK PRO 700DX tripod which weighs around 15 pounds, but is sturdy as a rock and allows me to take long exposures in extreme environments. On the topic of long exposures, I also have a set of LEE filters including the Big and Little Stoppers which work miracles on very bright days.

Feedback

This image is very straight forward, there weren't any tricks or gimmicks, just the right natural light an a particular gorgeous day. The image is; however, particularly striking not because of any technical aspect, but because of the contest of straight, industrial lines with the ever changing curvature of nature.
