Bled is known for the glacial lake, which makes it a major tourist attraction. Perched on a rock overlooking the lake is the iconic Castle. A small island in the middle of the lake is home to Assumption of Mary Pilgrimage Church; visitors frequently ring its bell for good luck. Bled is an important convention centre and tourist resort, offering a wide range of sports activities. Behind The Lens

Location

This specific photo was taken in Bled, Slovenia, near Rowing Center Zaka.

Time

It was taken in 19th of November 2015 around 1 PM, while attending a slow paced hike.

Lighting

It was a cold November day, but the weather cleared just in time for me to take this photo. Due to pure and uncontaminated environment with combination of low temperatures, lake's reflection was flawless.

Equipment

I use a Nikon D3200 and kit lenses 18-55 VR II. For this specific photo I also used Variable ND Filter and tripod.

Inspiration

I've come to Bled in a first place because of a doctor appointment, which unfortunately took longer than expected. It caused me to miss the ideal time of the day for photographing since I was hoping to catch iconic Bled's island beclouded in fog. By the time I was finished, fog already disappeared. Disappointed, yet still actuated, I headed towards previously mentioned Rowing Center Zaka. Luckily I took my camera with me, and I was blessed with sudden weather clearing which brought amazing view. I discovered a pier which shared a close resemblance to a springboard, hence naming the photo 'Jump'.

Editing

I always use only open-source editing programs. I combined three JPG shots into one using LumunanceHDR and enhanced contrast in GIMP. Due to the fact that Nikon D3200 is an entry-level DSLR camera without proper HDR settings, I focus more on taking pictures than post-processing alone.

In my camera bag

I'm a disabled person, thus carrying a lot of equipment is impossible. I can only take my Nikon D3200, kit lenses 18-55 VR II, Tamron 70-300 Di VC USD and a tripod.

Feedback

Sometimes you might just miss the ideal time of the day, like I did, but that doesn't mean you should give up! Autumn brings cooler days, but sunny weather might surprise you with crystal clear view on the mountains and in that time of the year lakes turn into mirrors. Take a walk around one, like I did in Bled, find your own special spot from which you can uncover hidden beauties. Lighting affects perception and ultimate photographic result, so you'll have to be patient and wait for the right moment.
