Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken while I was on a club trip to Bukit Malawati, Selangor. We were riding a tram and since the tram was moving in a slow pace, I was able to shoot this golden moment.

Time

It was around 6.30 PM when I shot this photo. I do lots of photo-shooting whenever I’m out on streets - while in a moving vehicle or moving from a place to another and for being able to shoot this in one single click probably one of the sweetest moments for me.

Lighting

I didn't really make an effort for the lighting part. It was simply a shot that I wasn't really interested in when I first captured it - not until the moment when I reviewed all my shots of that day. So, nothing worth to share.

Equipment

Canon EOS 1100D, f/10. No additional equipment were used.

Inspiration

I was actually looking forward to reaching the peak of the Bukit Malawati because there'd be lots of monkeys spreading up there. As the camera was in my hand and I tried to shoot whatever were there as we were moving up the hill by the tram -and most of the shots came out pretty nice. As we were about to pass through a corner, my friend saw this historical building and asked me to photograph it instead. I then realized almost every building at Bukit Malawati is a part of history, and of course, it was a great opportunity to record the moment digitally.

Editing

The photo was actually shot in color. I personally believe some architecture - historical buildings especially are much more appealing in black and white as it could depict the story or event behind that particular building in a much better way. So, I edited the image to black and white and it includes white balance correction and of course the contrast.

In my camera bag

I used to use the DSLR and I'm no longer use or have one. Nowadays I use my compact camera - Canon PowerShot ELPH 500 HS and my iPod for photo shooting. The fact that they're light makes it easy to bring to anywhere and of course they're cheaper. There's no need for additional maintenance as sophisticated as when I used DSLR Since nowadays I'm more into shooting landscape and macro, using a compact camera can be really useful and the results usually come out just fine.

Feedback

To obtain an ultimate shot of architecture, of course, getting yourself the right gear is the most important thing. Your'e lucky if you're able to have the best shot in just one single click but the luck doesn't come out that often. So, patience is another important key. And of course to shoot in different angle and perspective and even under different weathers. Choosing the right lens is also equally important. Last but not least, try to use photography software tools in order to enhance or making your photos much more arresting. It's no cheating because lots of professional photographers use such tools.
